Balasore Train Accident: Railway 3 Staff Accused in Custody as Investigation

Three railway staff members, namely Senior Section Engineer Arun Kumar Mahanta, Section Engineer Mohammed Amir Khan, and Technician Pappu Kumar, who were suspended by the Railways, appeared before the CBI Special Court on Friday after their remand period expired.

Bhubaneswar: After the CBI remand period concluded, a special court in Bhubaneswar has now placed the three accused railway officials from the Balasore train disaster in judicial custody. The accused individuals, namely Senior Section Engineer Arun Kumar Mahanta, Section Engineer Mohammed Amir Khan, and Technician Pappu Kumar, who were previously suspended by the Railways, appeared before the CBI Special Court on Friday following the expiration of their remand period. These individuals had been apprehended by the CBI on July 7.

The special court initially granted a five-day remand of the accused to the CBI, who is currently investigating the case, on July 7. Subsequently, on July 11, the court extended the remand period for an additional four days based on the request of the investigating agency.

The next hearing is scheduled for July 27.

The three accused individuals have been charged under IPC Sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 201 (destruction of evidence), as well as Section 153 of the Railways Act.

Although the CBI report is still pending, the investigation report from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), South Eastern Circle, has indicated that the accident occurred due to errors in the modification of the signalling circuit.

A tragic incident occurred on June 2, resulting in the loss of 293 lives and over 1,200 injuries. The Coromandel Express collided with a stationary freight train at Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore district. Furthermore, some of the derailed coaches collided with the Yeshwantpur-Howrah Express.
